Mother Teresa said: “We shall never know all the good that a smile can do” and it was with these words in mind that a few members of our XtraSpace Team set out for Irene Homes on Mandela Day.
Irene Homes, situated in Pretoria, has been enabling the mentally disabled since 1909. We were privileged to join Marina Lubbe, a carer who held a workshop for the residents, comprising of ball games followed by enjoyable tea and cake. The residents also knit squares and do basic embroidery.
Following a request by Irene Homes, XtraSpace donated R10,000 towards equipping one of their new homes with curtaining and linen for the bedrooms. We salute the efforts of our Wynberg team, who gave their 67 minutes to keep the residents of Irene Homes smiling.
And what about Cape Town?
Our Teams from the Cape Town Airport and Bellville branches made their way to Ubuntu House – a home which is part of the greater uMephi Project and is a place of safety for newborn babies. These children have been given up by their mothers, saved from abortions or are sometimes simply discarded after birth.
Our Team donated toys, food, bottles and feeding equipment to the House and got involved with the babies, bringing a little love and light to their lives. What better way to spend 67 minutes?
