How much is a self-storage unit in South Africa?
We sourced quotes from multiple storage providers and found that the average cost of a self-storage unit in South Africa is R460 per month for a small unit and R3,250 per month for a larger one. Prices vary significantly based on size, location and services offered.
Prices of small storage units
Small storage units range in size from 2 m2 to 9 m2. The average monthly unit prices are:
- R590 (3 m2)
- R1,300 (9 m2).
Price of medium storage units
Medium storage units range in size from 10 m2 to 15 m2. The average monthly unit price is:
- R1,480 (12 m2).
Price of large storage units
Large storage units range in size from 16 m2 – about the size of a small garage – to more than 45 m2. The average monthly unit price is:

Be cautious of very cheap storage prices
When doing research, be wary of very cheap storage unit prices. Some storage providers advertise cheaper storage units online with prices below R380. On further reading, you’ll see that these adverts state that “available units are limited”.
In practice, the cheapest unit available when you call a storage provider may cost significantly more. Additional costs, including insurance and administrative costs, can push up the real price per month.
Finally, be aware that some providers list storage unit prices online that are out of date. Some date back as far as 2017.
