If you have a pool, chances are you own at least a few lilos, pool-noodles and pool toys.
Keeping these items by the pool or on a shelf in a garage or shed is okay when you’re using them frequently. However, leaving them lying around between summers can cause them to deteriorate.
Make sure your pool toys and inflatables remain in good condition for next year by storing them properly, with these tips.
Preparing pool inflatables and toys for storage
Prevent the growth of mould and mildew, which can degrade pool gear, by cleaning toys and inflatables with either
- a solution of 125 ml of vinegar or bleach mixed with 4 litres of cold water
- 1 cup of baking soda for every 4 litres of cold water.
If you choose to use a bleach solution, wear rubber gloves and goggles to protect your skin and eyes.
Dip a scrubbing brush into the cleaning solution and lightly scrub each item. Use a hose to rinse off any leftover solution, and then leave toys and inflatables in the shade to air dry.
Deflate pool inflatables only once they’re fully dry.
To prevent the sides of an inflatable from sticking together in storage, coat the entire surface with a thin layer of talcum powder or cornstarch.
Once large inflatables have been deflated and dusted, lay them on a flat surface and gently fold or roll them up.
How to store pool inflatables and toys
If possible, store inflatables in their original packaging; otherwise place them in individual boxes, plastic containers or zip-up storage bags.
Choose storage bins or mesh bags for small toys, goggles, snorkels and water guns and noodle caddies for pool noodles.
Where to store pool inflatables and toys
To protect your pool toys from the elements, find an enclosed, dry space, such as a garage or shed, to store them.
One clever idea for saving space is to install one or more ceiling hooks, and use them to hang bags of pool toys.
If you don’t have garage space, an ideal alternative is to store summer gear – including pool equipment and toys – with XtraSpace. We offer clean, secure self-storage units at branches nationwide.
