Even committed car collectors like Jay Leno and Chris Evans would have to concede defeat in the face of this insanely big car collection. While the exact number of cars in this impressive collection is unknown, experts are estimating it at between 3000 and 6000 luxury, concept and vintage cars.
The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has a net worth of about $20 billion and is one of the richest royals in the world, according to Forbes. His car collection was once estimated to be worth around $5 billion.
The collection
The Sultan’s love of cars is so well known that some luxury car makers, such as Mercedes, have created one-of-a-kind cars for his collection, meaning there are cars in this collection that are found nowhere else on Earth.
Among many, many other cars, the collection includes:
- over 600 Rolls Royce’s
- over 570 Mercedes-Benz
- over 450 Ferrari’s
- over 380 Bentley’s
- over 200 BMW’s
- over 170 Jaguars
- over 130 Koenigsegg sports cars.
Notable cars in the collection
Ferrari Mythos
Included in the 450+ Ferraris are two Ferrari Mythos concept cars. This 1989 concept car was designed by Pininfarina but was never made available to the public.
Unfortunately, no photos are known to exist of the Sultan’s Ferrari Mythos. The only other model, the original concept, is stored at Pininfarina style centre.
Bentley Dominator
Bentley isn’t known for making SUVs but they did make a few especially for the Sultan. It was called the Dominator and the sultan ordered six of them. Unfortunately, little is known about the custom specifications of the Dominator. Even pictures are hard to come by.
Custom Rolls Royce Silver Spur Limousine
This Rolls Royce is one of the most expensive cars in the collection. It’s been decorated with an undisclosed amount of 24-karat gold.
The car is worth almost $15 million. The Sultan’s daughter used it on her wedding day to get to the ceremony.
Right-hand drive Ferrari F40
All Ferrari F40’s that were manufactured for the public came out of the factory with left-hand drive. The Sultan ordered between seven and ten right-hand drive versions for his collection. The one pictured above used to be owned by the Sultan but is now in the UK.
Italdesign BMW Nazca M12
This car was created as a concept but BMW built one for the Sultan upon request. This makes the BMW Nazca extremely rare.
Again, the one owned by the Sultan is shrouded in mystery. There are no details about the specifications and no freely-circulating images can be found.
Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR
Originally designed for the for the FIA GT Championship race, the CLK GTR isn’t very rare by itself. But the one ordered by the Sultan for his collection is the only one in the world to have right-hand drive, making it truly unique.
Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental – Star of India
This 1934 Rolls Royce once belonged to His Highness Dharmendrasinhji Lakhajiraj, the Thakore Sahib of Rajkot City in British India. It is considered the most expensive Rolls Royce in the world with a value of $14 million.
The Sultan bought it at an auction where it claimed the world record for the most expensive car sold during an auction.
